A new economic report revealed that obtaining 2,400 calories per day needed to live in a balanced manner, distributed over 3 meals, requires about 4,213 SP per day per person, based on the figures put forward by the report, which assumed eating certain somewhat cheap types of food to obtain good nutritional value.
According to the report, a family consisting of 5 people needs 17,500 SP per day to eat only the necessary food, i.e. about 520 thousand SP per month, except for the accompanying necessities (such as oil, margarine, tea, coffee, fruits and others in specific quantities) which raise the monthly cost to 632 A thousand pounds for food and drink alone, according to the “Al-Hal Net” website.
The report stated that an individual can achieve the recognized nutritional value for breakfast by eating 770 calories per day, at a cost of more than 1,000 SP per person, and about 150,000 SP per family per month, distributed to the individual as follows:
One egg a day to get 70 calories, and its price today is 300 pounds.
100 grams of labneh or cheese to get 200 calories at a price of approximately 670 SP, since a kilo is more than 6,600 SP.
160 grams of bread (one loaf) saves 500 calories by about 30 SP, since the bag is sold for 200 SP and contains 7 loaves.
Regarding lunch, an individual can achieve the recognized nutritional value by eating 800 calories per day, at a cost of 2,066 pounds per person per day, and about 310,000 pounds per family per month, distributed as follows:
150 grams of chicken meat or another vegetable protein source (such as legumes) to gain 250 calories, at an average cost of 866 pounds.
200 grams of rice or pasta achieves 500 calories, at a cost of 1,000 pounds (with the cost of cooking it with oil or butter).
100 grams of cucumbers and 100 tomatoes are about 50 calories, at a cost of about 200 pounds.
As for the dinner meal, the individual can achieve the recognized nutritional value by eating 750 calories per day, at a cost of approximately 430 pounds per person per day, and about 64 thousand pounds per family per month, distributed per person as follows:
100 grams of legumes (ground chickpeas) provides 250 calories at a cost of 400 Syrian pounds, since a kilo costs approximately 4,000 pounds.
At least one loaf of bread (160 grams) provides 500 calories and its official price is about 30 pounds.
The report pointed out that most Syrians do not monitor the nutritional values they receive daily, and rely on their financial means to purchase, and do not buy chicken and eggs daily, but they are shortened on a weekly or monthly basis, and some of them dispense with them completely.
The report noted that some families had to shorten dinner by delaying lunch, while others depend on one meal per day, while other families depend on cooking repetitive dishes such as rice, vegetables, mujadara, potatoes and pasta.
A local newspaper confirmed in July 2021 that the cost of living exceeded one million pounds per month during the first quarter of 2021, while the minimum salary and wages became 72 thousand pounds after the recent increase, meaning that it covers only about 7% of those costs.
