The Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Amr Salem, affirmed that we cannot carry out a random campaign on markets and prices, saying: “I support the policy of controlling markets and prices as much as possible, step by step in a thoughtful manner,” according to Al-Watan newspaper.
In his statement, the minister did not deny that there is confusion in prices due to the high cost of transportation and the scarcity of fuel, especially since yesterday we had several cars that were supposed to be shipped to several governorates, and they did not have allocations, but the issue was addressed with the Minister of Oil, which negatively affects the prices of goods and materials.
Salem considered that the only thing whose price has actually increased and whose source is “coffee” from Brazil, pointing out that we have large shipments of coffee in Syria at the old price, and it will be preserved and prevented from monopoly.
Salem revealed that there is a computer network connection between the customs and the ministry to find out what goods entered Syria and to end the argument for raising prices due to the high prices of goods, stressing that with this connection it is possible to detect if the goods are new or old, and thus the market is controlled.
At the same time, the minister did not deny that there were some cases of monopoly, but the ministry, through its continuous tours, was able to enter many shops, and it was directed that the tours not be on small shops only, but on importers, large distributors and warehouses.
He added that a lot of sugar and walnut quantities were seized, which turned out to be enough for Syria for a year, pointing out that it will be put on the market through the Positive Intervention Foundation, and on the other hand, there are resident patrols with some importers to supervise shipment, in addition to a round-the-clock report after the cars that were Shipped from all materials and as there are large quantities shipped.
Salem saw that there is no need to raise sugar prices, and through his tours yesterday on the Al-Hal market, he confirmed that there was no kilo of sugar as a result of the monopoly, while today there are tens of tons that have been offered by the monopolists.
