Egyptian MP Hisham Al-Jahil submitted a new draft law to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to amend some provisions of the Civil Status Law, to increase the penalty on the issue of compound names.
Al-Jahil indicated that the philosophy of the new project comes with the aim of increasing this penalty, up to imprisonment for a period of no less than a year, and a fine of no less than 5,000 pounds, according to the “Sada Al-Balad” website.
Al-Jahil pointed out that toughening the penalties will resolve the issue of compound names, and the selection of names that are alien to Egyptian society among newborns.
Other modifications
The draft law also touched on amending the penalties related to the application of Article 54 of the Civil Status Law, which obliges any citizen who has lost his identity card or when it is damaged, the need to obtain a replacement for the lost or damaged within 15 days.
Article 21
Article 21 of the Egyptian law stipulates that it is not permissible for two brothers or two sisters from the father to share one name, and it is not permissible for the name to be compound or contrary to public order or the provisions of heavenly laws.
In accordance with this law, a fine of no less than 100 pounds and not more than 200 pounds shall be imposed on anyone who violates the provisions of this article.
Banned names
Egyptian media revealed earlier, the details of the names proposed to be banned in a draft law, and the monitoring of penalties such as imprisonment, a fine, and the penalty for choosing compound names or violating religions.
