Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi cut short his visit to Egypt, returning to Baghdad, due to the sit-in of the followers of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al-Sadr, in front of the Supreme Judicial Council.
In a statement, Al-Kadhimi warned, “against disrupting the work of the judicial institution, which exposes the country to real dangers.”
He called on “all political forces to calm down, to take advantage of the opportunity of the national dialogue to get the country out of its current crisis, and to hold an immediate meeting of the leaders of the political forces in order to activate the procedures of the national dialogue and defuse the crisis.”
For his part, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, said that the dispute should not be with the judiciary.
He stressed in a brief statement, “We support the demonstrations in accordance with the legal and constitutional contexts, in a manner that preserves the state and its institutions and protects its existence.”
“But our litigation should not be with the judiciary, to which we all resort if we dispute,” he added.
The Supreme Judicial Council also announced the suspension of its work and the work of its courts.
The council indicated that “the suspension decision comes as a protest against these unconstitutional behavior that violates the law, and to hold the government and the political party behind this sit-in legally responsible for the consequences of this behavior.”
