The Public Prosecutor in Daraa, Bassam al-Omari, said that there is a girl kidnapped in Daraa two years ago, and there is no information about her so far.
Al-Omari added in a statement to Al-Watan newspaper that there were about five kidnappings of children last year, the last of which was the kidnapping of the child Fawaz Qutaifan, and that 3 children kidnapped in Daraa last year were liberated.
The Public Defender stated that one of the children was released by paying the ransom, which amounted to about 20 million Syrian pounds, but investigations are still ongoing to arrest the kidnappers, while the rest were liberated by arresting the kidnappers, noting that all the children who were kidnapped are close in age. Between 7 and 11 years old.
Al-Omari confirmed that the kidnappings decreased compared to last year, after the security stability in many areas in Daraa and the recent security settlements for wanted persons. The evidence for this is that eight kidnappings were recorded during the first three months of last year, while in the current year there are only two kidnappings.
He indicated that there have been cases of kidnapping of adults, but not all cases are referred to the judiciary, considering that they are resolved amicably after payment of sums of money, especially in areas where armed gangs are active.
A person was arrested who tried to blackmail the kidnapped’s family by having information about the kidnappers in exchange for a sum of money, adding: He was arrested after he was ambushed and during investigations it was found that he did not have any information about the kidnappers and that he tried to blackmail the kidnapped’s family to get money only, and he is currently Arrested in court on charges of extortion.
He stressed that the criminal security has not stopped investigations over the past period and a new arrest will be opened for any new information, noting that not only in this case, but also in similar cases, pointing out that investigations are continuing.
