Damascus Governorate is investing in “parking lots” and “parking is no longer free!”

Damascus Governorate has begun planning some main streets in preparation for installing rented parking spaces on them.
The rented parking spaces will be determined on the ground through “paint or ground nails,” and any overstep in stopping any car outside the specified parking is considered forbidden parking, as declared by the Damascus governorate.
The Director of the Traffic and Transport Engineering Directorate in Damascus Governorate, Yasser Bastouni, said that the governorate will maintain an appointment with 3,500 new parking lots distributed over the capital’s main, commercial and economic streets such as Al-Hamra, Al-Marjah and Al-Shaalan, and others.
In a special statement to “Hashtag”, Bastouni confirmed that the company that won the tender for the construction of the rented parking is working to finish and rehabilitate the parking lots, which are almost ready to be launched, within two weeks at the latest.
These parking lots, which have a one-hour fare of 500 pounds, will allow the largest citizens to find a place to park their cars, according to Bastouni, amid the difficulty that the driver used to spend in obtaining a “parking” in many of the main streets of Damascus.
In the details of the tender contract awarded to a private Syrian company for renting car parks, called “the smart programming company”, Bastouni said that the contract that was concluded between the governorate and the company amounted to two billion and 200 million Syrian pounds, and many companies submitted to the tender, before reaching a contract. The latter has a duration of seven years.
Today, the company has worked to equip about 800 neighboring parking lots out of 3,500 parking lots as agreed upon in the contract signed with Damascus Governorate
The company still has a period to complete the project, according to the 6-month deadline specified in the contract, which began last April.
Bastouni points out that a great benefit will accrue from the proceeds to the governorate, which could be reflected in additional services that will be provided by the governorate, and this step also enables the organization of parking lots and the provision of places to park more cars for citizens.
The governorate of Damascus announced late last year that it had invited bids for a car park service project on public properties in some Damascus streets, after the first announcement in the last quarter of last year had been “failed”.
And in January 2020, the Executive Office of the Governorate of Damascus approved the contract, which includes the project of servicing leased sites in some Damascus streets, with an annual amount of 2.1 billion pounds.
There were two public auctions for the contract to invest in the leased sites, the first in November 2020, and it failed, while the second auction was on January 13, 2020.
The first auction failed due to the high cost of equipment to be installed in the streets that contain modern technologies.
