Director of the Forensic Medicine Authority in Syria: 2,5% of the bodies are autopsied…The reason is the presence of a criminal suspicion

The Director-General of the Forensic Medicine Authority in Syria, Zaher Hajjo, revealed that 2.5% of the bodies received by the Forensic Medicine Authority are dissected during the presence of criminal suspicion or ambiguity in the causes that led to the death.

Rejection of the idea of autopsy

In exclusive statements to Hashtag, Hajjo indicated that the majority of Syrian society rejects the idea of autopsy, and that the judiciary and the forensic doctor, when ascertaining whether the death was natural, respond to the wishes of the people.
He explained that resorting to this stage (autopsy) is absolutely necessary in case of suspicion of a crime.
At that time, Hajjo says, even if the parents object, the final decision for the autopsy rests with the judge based on the request of the recommendation submitted by the forensic doctor, in the interest of scientific integrity and access to accurate results that require autopsy.

moral duty

Hajjo confirms that the forensic doctors are making every effort to return the body as it was before the autopsy, based on what is required by medical and moral duty.
Pointing out that preserving the dignity of the deceased is the first duty of the forensic doctor, which requires access to justice and a proper and academic examination.
Respecting the wishes of the parents
Hajjo touched on the story of the bride, Alaa Kahil, who died suddenly in the wedding hall about two weeks ago.
He added that a committee composed of three forensic doctors was formed to examine her body, and blood and urine samples were drawn and sent to the laboratory.

Several possibilities of death..

It is noteworthy that in a previous statement to “Hashtag”, Cardiologist Amin Al-Khatib said that the young woman should have been presented to the forensic doctor for an autopsy, and not only a diagnosis of “cardiac arrest”.
And he indicated that sometimes, the condition could be a stroke, a clot in the lung, or any other causes that could be related to her death.
He stated that the patient did not have an ECG before and there were no signs or indications that she was suffering from pain.
