For the first time since the outbreak of the war, representatives of the people of Aleppo are meeting to discuss a document that will restore life to the markets of their old city, which have always closed their doors over the past years.
Historians, experts, specialists and parliamentarians from Aleppo, merchants, industrialists and craftsmen, legal experts and civil associations, representatives of the relevant official institutions, representatives of international organizations and agencies, microfinance institutions, and the province of Aleppo, all of them meet today in the old city in a sophisticated workshop aimed at discussing the strategy of reviving Aleppo’s old markets and its entrances.
Over the course of three days, the meeting will discuss a detailed document that includes the organizational framework for reviving the Straight Street and all its entrances, aspects related to housing and social development in those markets, how to preserve buildings, the issue of traffic and transportation in them, and aspects related to economic development and infrastructure rehabilitation according to standards for restoration and reconstruction, which together constitute a precise strategy. It guarantees access to a complete revival of the Aleppo markets.
The document includes an accurate and comprehensive description of 37 markets and approximately 1,100 shops, the nature of their damages and their structural condition, in addition to the infrastructure and economic development required by these markets. The document that the people of Aleppo are discussing is a work map that guarantees the unification of all efforts in one clear path until Aleppo returns, all of Aleppo, a capital pulsing with economy, production and life.
