Last night, the city of Berlin began switching off the lighting of historical monuments and buildings, as part of a national effort to save energy with the decline in Russian gas supplies.
This will include 200 buildings, including the Victory Column, Charlottenburg Palace, and the Town Hall.
With this measure, the city will be able to save on the use of 1,400 devices dedicated to lighting those sites.
“Given the war in Ukraine and Russian threats in terms of energy policy, it is important that we use our energy with the greatest care,” Berlin municipality member Bettina Jarasek said in a statement.
This comes in the wake of the announcement by German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, that his official residence in Berlin, Bellevue Palace, will not be lit at night, except on special occasions such as official visits.
The government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz had called several weeks ago for a “national mobilization” in order to save energy, whose prices have risen dramatically.
Several major cities across the country have announced plans to save energy.

Earlier, an American media report indicated that Germany is building a large thermal reservoir, “heater”, to help the country in heating the home in the event that Russian gas supplies run out.

“This is a huge heater that will help us heat up when we need it,” explained Tanya Welgos, head of the German subsidiary of Vattenfall Heating from Sweden.
“Then we can release this heat if necessary,” she added.
