Today, Sunday, the Executive Office of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee announced the withdrawal from the competitions of the Fifth Islamic Solidarity Games, scheduled to be held in Turkey at the beginning of next month.

The office said in a press statement: “In protest against targeting civilians in Dohuk, and in line with the Iraqi popular position and the recommendations of the Iraqi Parliament in its last emergency session, and the government’s position represented by the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Executive Office of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee decided, in its emergency meeting this morning, to withdraw from the Fifth Islamic Solidarity Games, which is scheduled to start in the Turkish city of Konya on the ninth of next August.
He added, “The decision of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee came in line with the Iraqi state system with its parliamentary and governmental aspects, as it is part of the aspirations and demands of the Iraqi people above all.”
Turkish attack
Last week, 9 Iraqi citizens were killed and dozens of others were wounded in a Turkish attack on a resort in northern Iraq.
The Security Council responds
The UN Security Council has set next Tuesday as the date for an emergency session on the Turkish aggression on Iraqi territory.
A diplomatic source told Al-Iraqia that “at the request of Iraq, the UN Security Council has set next Tuesday as a date for an emergency session regarding the Turkish aggression on Iraqi territory.”
On Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had sent a letter of complaint to the Security Council to hold an emergency session on the Turkish aggression.
