A report published by the opposition website “Jusoor” said that “a large part of the Syrians in Syria depend on the aid of their relatives and acquaintances abroad, where small monthly or semi-monthly sums are transferred, ranging between 125 and 150 dollars on average, and the number of beneficiaries of these transfers is estimated at more than 5 Millions of people, distributed over the different regions of the country, with monthly amounts estimated between 125 and 150 million dollars per month.
The report stated that “these remittances increase in the month of Ramadan in terms of the amounts sent and the size of the segment they cover, for reasons related to the culture of the majority of the Syrian people, which urges increased spending during Ramadan, an issue that is considered mandatory during Ramadan in Islamic law, and prefers most of the displaced Syrians in various regions. all over the world to pay these alms in Syria.”
He added that “these remittances are received in different ways, most of them are made through a network of offices around the world, and the amounts are paid in US dollars or Turkish lira in the regions of northern Syria, which account for a large proportion of remittances, while most of these amounts are delivered in Syrian pounds in the regions of the Syrian government, They are rarely delivered in dollars, due to the high penalties imposed on foreign exchange trading.
According to Jusoor for Studies, these remittances “reflect on improving the standard of living for a large number of the Syrian population, and it is expected that the number of beneficiaries will reach more than 7.5 million people, and they are mainly used to finance the family’s needs of food commodities, especially flour, sugar, bulgur and rice.” Some types of vegetables and fruits.
The report pointed out that these remittances “can reflect positively, and to a lesser extent, from the food market on the market for ready-made clothes that people accept to buy at the end of Ramadan, which activates the movement of markets, generates incomes for workers in commodity markets, and increases the speed of money turnover. Consequently, the pressure increases on prices towards their rise.”
