Latakia ranks first in the incidence of cancer

On World Cancer Day, the Director of Communicable and Chronic Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Zuhair Al-Sahwi, confirms that the highest rates of cancer are recorded in Lattakia Governorate, followed by Damascus, Rural Damascus, Sweida and Tartous.
The Director of Communicable and Chronic Diseases, Zuhair Al-Sahwi, told SANA that about 17.5 thousand cases of cancer were recorded, with an incidence of about 79 cases per 100 thousand of the population.
54% of them are in females and 46% in males, while the peak injuries were recorded according to age groups for males between 60 and 64 years and for females between 50 and 54 years. This is according to the latest National Cancer Registry numbers recorded annually.
Dr. Al-Sahwi indicated that there are 14 hospitals in Syria that provide free treatment for cancer patients, in addition to the Basma unit for the treatment of children’s cancer.
Dr. Al-Sahwi stated that the most common types of cancer in males range from lung cancer by 20%, colorectal cancer by 10%, leukemia 9%, and prostate cancer by 9%.
In females, breast cancer was 39%, thyroid cancer 7%, leukemia 7%, colorectal cancer 6%, and lymphomas 6%.
According to the World Health Organization, 30 to 50 percent of cancer deaths can be prevented by modifying or avoiding certain risk factors, including avoiding tobacco use, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, and having a hepatitis B and HPV vaccination.
