The assistant head of the Latakia Chamber of Agriculture, Nawaf Shehadeh, said that the damages to agricultural crops in the province were calculated, after a sea storm that hit the province.
In a special statement to “Hashtag”, Shehadeh indicated that 185 greenhouses planted with zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant and cucumbers were damaged in the countryside of Jableh, in addition to areas of tunnels planted with zucchini, within the scope of the work of the extension units in the villages of Siano, Dower, Baabda, Ashrafieh, Al-Burjan, Al-Qutaibiya, Dower Al-Khatib, Sakhmim, Al-Sharsheer and Hami. Jableh countryside, as a result of the frost and the sea storm that hit the governorate.
Shehadeh confirmed that the last depression was stronger than the previous one; The farmers’ losses did not exceed the damage to some citrus trees, which were not large in number, according to Shehadeh.
Shehadeh indicated that the depression caused 10% of the orange, and 15% of the Yafawi variety, to fall as a result of heavy rains within the scope of work of the guidance villages of Samiya and Tarjano. 45% distributed over the categories (Valencia, Yafawi and Abu Sra).
In the Lattakia region, Shehadeh indicated that 10 greenhouses were damaged within the scope of the extension unit’s work in the village of Mashkita planted with zucchini, cucumbers and eggplant, and in the Al-Haffah region, 2 greenhouses planted with tomatoes in the villages of Samiya and Khirbet Haishout were damaged, with the crop damage rate reaching about 50%.
Shehadeh pointed out that the stormy weather from the past depression greatly affected the aforementioned greenhouses, at rates ranging from 75 to 100%, on the production of tomatoes and zucchini, in addition to the flying of nylon strips and bending the iron structure in them.
The assistant director of Lattakia Agriculture pointed out that the frost damage on the zucchini tunnels was the greatest. It reached about 90% of the production as a result of the crop being affected while it is in the process of bearing fruit, indicating that the affected area is estimated at about 20 dunums.
