Member of the Syrian People’s Assembly: “All the people deserve zakat”

A member of the People’s Assembly, Nasser Youssef Al-Nasser, addressed what he called “the members of the Supreme Council for Ifta in the Syrian Arab Republic,” asking them to send a letter to the Syrian government and the People’s Assembly stating that the Syrian people as a whole need zakat.
Al-Nasser wrote a post on his Facebook page in which he said, “As long as you set the penance for breaking the fast (ransom for a poor person or the Ramadan breakfast) at 10,000 SYP per meal for one person, as a minimum, this means that feeding a family of 5 people is 5 x 10,000. 50000 x 30 days equals 1500000 Syrian Pounds of food, only one meal per day.
The Syrian parliamentarian added that the income of most Syrian families is between 75,000 and 150,000 pounds, therefore, “the Ministry of Endowments, as it bears the banner of ethics and virtue, must submit an official, historical written request to to the Council of Ministers and the People’s Assembly in order to absolve her responsibility towards God and the people and to inform the concerned.
According to Al-Nasser, the Ministry of Endowments and its Ifta Council should make it clear to the government and the People’s Assembly that after studying the value of zakat, it was found that the cost of one daily meal is 10,000 pounds per person, and therefore “the people all deserve to be paid because they already can’t feed themselves.”
