Official: The Damascus metro project failed because the citizen does not have the ticket price

Damascus metro

The property manager in Damascus governorate, Husam El-Din Saffour, said that the “Damascus Metro” project has been talked about during the past years with Chinese and Iranian delegations to “revive” it, but the ticket price was an obstacle.
In an interview with a local radio today, Friday, January 7, Saffour added that during the past years, meetings were held with foreign delegations, as “we made offers and received studies and offers from those delegations, but no agreement was reached because the project is economically costly, and companies do not apply for it, “due to the high cost and disproportionateness with the income. If implemented, the ticket price will be 5000 Syrian pounds in order to be economically feasible for the investor, since the price of the international ticket ranges between one and two dollars, and this price is not commensurate with the income in Syria,” according to Saffour .
Talking about the “underground” project is not new, as there were ideas before the war to establish the Damascus metro and it was expected to be completed in 2020, and the “Hejaz Railway General Corporation” spoke in 2019 about its intention to reactivate the suburban transport project between Damascus And its countryside, which includes underground and above-ground tracks.
According to the director of the foundation, Hassanein Muhammad, in previous statements, the suburban transport project that the institution started with since 2003 has reached a completion rate of 70%, but it stopped during the war years due to the lack of funding, he said.
Syrians suffer from a stifling transportation crisis, as many complain about the lack of microbuses, their lack of commitment to work, poor internal transportation, severe overcrowding in buses, and the improper treatment of some drivers.
