The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said that a political solution to the crisis in Syria “is still a long way off,” noting that the meetings of the mini-committee of the Constitutional Committee will meet at the end of this month.
Elam media reported that Pedersen indicated, at the annual conference of Syrian donors, “Brussels-6”, that a political solution to the Syrian crisis is “far off,” noting that the rounds of the Constitutional Committee did not achieve the desired results, expressing “hope” that the next round would achieve “gradual progress.”
Pedersen called on the participants in the next meeting to focus on the issue of the Syrian settlement and the matters that concern the Syrians
A new round of constitutional committee meetings is scheduled for May 28, after the agreement of the UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, with the parties to the committee’s meetings, the Syrian opposition, the government and civil society.
Pedersen had called, during the Security Council session a few days ago, for delegations to prepare texts for discussion, and to focus on matters that most Syrians could agree on.
“There is a need to work to create a safe, calm and neutral environment inside Syria, starting with confidence-creating measures, as required by Security Council Resolution 2254, and a number of mutual confidence-creating measures that can be implemented in parallel step by step,” Pedersen added.
On Tuesday, the Sixth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” was launched in the Belgian capital, without the participation of Syria and Russia. The participants pledged $6.7 billion, the bulk of which will be allocated to help Syrian refugees.
