President al-Assad issues a law that includes amendments to a number of articles of the Penal Code

President Bashar al-Assad issued Law No. 15 of 2022, which includes amendments to a number of articles of the Penal Code issued by Legislative Decree No. 148 of 1949 and its amendments.
The new law abolished the penalty of life and temporary hard labor, from the penal code and all other legislation, and replaced it with temporary and life imprisonment.
President Bashar al-Assad issued the law that raised the minimum and maximum penalty for offensive, misdemeanor and criminal fines.
Amend Articles 285 and 286 of the Penal Code to specify the penalty for those in Syria who make calls aimed at compromising the national identity or awakening racial or sectarian strife by temporary detention. The person who transmits in Syria news known to be false or exaggerated that sow despair or weakness among community members.
The new law specifies the penalty for every Syrian who spreads false or exaggerated news that undermines the prestige of the state, with imprisonment for at least six months and deserves the same punishment, according to the law. Any Syrian who writes or publishes orally calling for the exclusion or surrender of part of the Syrian land shall be punished by imprisonment for at least one year.
The new law increases penalties for those who steal cars, their contents or any of their external parts, as well as those who steal motorbikes.
