Syria: SDF-controlled areas suffer from meningitis.. WHO is recording, and Syrian health is monitoring

The Director of Raqqa Health, Dr. Ghiath Al-Hamoud, said in an exclusive statement to “Hashtag” that in the past period, some doctors received information about meningitis in the areas of Raqqa and Tabqa, which are outside the control of the Syrian government.
According to the information that reached the Raqqa Health Directorate, the number of injuries exceeded 250, most of them among children.
Hammoud pointed out that the World Health Organization, which is concerned with monitoring the situation, in those areas being outside the control of the Syrian government, has documented 70 cases of meningitis, most of which are among children.

Hammoud stressed that the “SDF” cannot take responsibility for what the Ministry of Health is doing, and it does not have an infrastructure, and it is unable to care for patients, so fears grow of the disease spreading further and wider in those areas.

The liberated countryside.. under monitoring

Hammoud added, “Currently, in the countryside liberated from Raqqa, follow-up and investigation of the status of the infected cases are underway to monitor the increase or decrease in the severity of the disease.
Hammoud also confirmed that the liberated areas in Raqqa are so far free of meningitis injuries, but “we are afraid of moving and crossing,” he said.

Hammoud continues: “In every health center, we have a monitoring and early reporting team to control the disease in the event of its transmission.”

Leishmaniasis is another story

On the other hand, the Director of Health of Raqqa spoke of a decrease in the number of leishmaniasis cases in the liberated countryside of the province.
Hammoud said that when the liberated countryside was devoid of residents, waste accumulated, insects and rodents spread, and the “field mouse” and “sand fly” multiplied, which led to the rapid spread of leishmaniasis there.
However, after the return of the Syrian state to those areas, facilities and services were restored and agriculture returned, and here what is meant is “the conditions that led to the decline of leishmaniasis as a factor and an incubator environment for the disease,” and the number of infections decreased, he said.
Hammoud pointed out that after the numbers of leishmaniasis cases amounted to 3,000 patients, the Health Directorate in Raqqa today records 228 people receiving treatment in the western and eastern countryside of the governorate, only.
