The death of the statue maker “Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi” in Damascus

The Syrian plastic artist Abdullah Al-Sayed passed away yesterday, Friday, in the Syrian capital, Damascus, at the age of 81.
The artist Abdullah al-Sayed was known as one of the most prominent names in Syrian sculpture and plastic art, as he made the famous statue of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi in Damascus.

“My uncle passed away this morning, Friday, a natural death at his home in Damascus,” his nephew Wadih Atefeh told AFP by phone.
During a long career, El-Sayed began his work as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Then head of the sculpture department at the college, before his work was known nationwide.
Among the most prominent works of the late artist, the monument to Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, which was executed by al-Sayyid near the Citadel of Damascus in 1992 and became one of the symbols of the city.

Al-Sayed executed other monuments, the most famous of which is “Noah’s Ark” in the city of Dallas in the United States in 2001, according to AFP.
The death of the son of the city of Masyaf in central Syria caused grief in the Syrian artistic community, and a number of artists and sculptors mourned him on social networking sites.
“Abdullah al-Sayed is gone, and we have all lost a great artistic stature that is difficult to replace,” his close friend, the sculptor Ghazi Anna, told AFP.
