The ‘egg and chicken dilemma’ continues: Will the government import chickens instead of subsidizing breeders?

Chicken

Chicken prices are still stable at their high levels, in light of the weak purchasing power and the decline of the majority of citizens.
During the past few days, news spread about the government’s intention to import chicken to reduce its price to the consumer. In this context, the head of the Butchers Association in Damascus, Edmond Qutaish, confirmed in a special statement to “Hashtag”, that so far no poultry has been imported, and no official decisions have been issued in this regard, stressing that poultry breeders are demanding that they be given the necessary fodder and diesel for heating, to increase production, and there are official directives to increase the amount of feed for poultry at the lowest price.
Qutaish added that if the import is done, there will be no lower prices because there is a cost of importing, and the foreign market is more expensive than here.
Regarding the prices currently in the markets, the head of the Butchers Association said that prices have been stable for three months for white meat, and this week, on the occasion of the holidays, there was a slight increase; The price of a chicken kilo was 6600 Syrian pounds.
Regarding the Syrian Trade Corporation’s decision to sell only one chicken per day to each citizen, and only one kilo of cutlets, Qutaish explained that this is a good step so that there will be no trade and an increase in prices.
Poultry breeders complain of several obstacles, most notably the high prices of feed, veterinary medicines, transportation fees and the prices of cardboard dishes, stressing that the support provided by the Feed Foundation every two months is not enough to feed poultry for one day.
