The Supreme Council of the Union unanimously elected, on Saturday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, to be the third president of the Emirates, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
The Council held a meeting at Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs stated that “according to Article 51 of the constitution, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected President of UAE, succeeding the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.”
Sky News Arabia said that the Sheikhs, members of the Supreme Council of the Union, “confirmed their keenness to fulfill the original values and principles established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which established the position of the UAE at the regional and global levels, and strengthened its different national achievements.”
The website added: “The Council expressed its full confidence that the people of UAE will remain as desired by Zayed and the founders, always as a faithful guardian of the union and its gains at all levels.”
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his appreciation for the precious trust placed in him by his brothers, the elders, members of the Supreme Council of the Union, the rulers of Emirates, praying to the Almighty to guide him and help him to bear the responsibility of this great trust, and to fulfill its right to serve his country and the loyal people of Emirates.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a tweet on Twitter: “Today, the Federal Supreme Council elected my brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as President of the State.”
He continued, “Mohammed bin Zayed is the shadow of Zayed and his extension in us. He is the founder of our state’s centenary. He is the protector of our union. We bless him, and we choose him, and our people choose him. The whole country follows him to take him on the paths of glory, glory and power, God willing.”
