The Forest Platform warns of a severe spread of fires in Syria

The Forestry and Fire Monitoring Platform of the Public Authority for Remote Sensing warned of the possibility of severe fires spreading yesterday, Tuesday, in forest areas, especially in the forests of the eastern slope of the coastal mountain range.
The platform’s chairwoman, Rosa Karmouqa, said that the platform published yesterday an update of its map showing the intensity of fires spread index for the first day of June, which shows a general increase in its indicators in forest areas.
She added to “SANA” that the platform provides maps and a risk indicator for the spread of fire, which contribute to providing data to forest departments, thus helping them to prioritize preparation and intervention in sites with a higher risk of fires.
She explained that the maps placed periodically do not necessarily mean that a fire broke out, but rather indicate the existence of appropriate conditions for the possibility of its outbreak, and therefore the necessary preparations must be taken.
The General Directorate of Meteorology expected in its evening bulletin that the weather today will be relatively hot, clear, in general, misty and dusty in the eastern regions, the island and the Badia.
The directorate confirmed that the temperature will rise by six degrees compared to today’s temperatures, especially in the areas of the eastern foot of the coastal mountain chain.
The fire season started early this year in Hama governorate with rising temperatures. At the beginning of this month, 42 fires were recorded in the city.
On May 16, the Daraa Fire Brigade announced that they had put out six fires that broke out in plants, agricultural crops, trees, dry grass and a residential house.
Last October, fires broke out in forests and mountain forests in the countryside of Lattakia and Hama, which spread to large areas, more than 15 km in the forests of Wadi Khaled area in the countryside of Homs, close to the Syrian-Lebanese border. The fires also reached the forests on the Turkish border, and the fires resulted in Losses described as great in agricultural and forest lands and in the property of citizens.
