The director of maintenance in the Damascus governorate, Ghassan al-Khatib, revealed to “Hashtag” that the flooding of the “Tora” river, the tributary of the “Barada” river, caused the flood that took place in Rabwah in the Damascus governorate, which is the result of two factors: the first is the melting of snow in the mountain tops.
Al-Khatib added that the snow this year is more than other years, despite the fact that the percentage of rain was relatively low. Winter was late and the low temperatures lasted for a long time, followed by a sudden rise in temperature, which led to this flood.
As for the other factor, the Public Water Corporation diverted a large part of the excess water in its reservoirs to the course of the Tora River, which led to this flooding of an unexpected level compared to previous years.
Al-Khatib indicated that work is currently being done to divert the water course from the “Tora” River to the “Barada” River to relieve pressure and absorb the existing quantity.
Al-Khatib indicated that the water rush in a large way took one path leading to some dams, and the Damascus Governorate is working on treatment from early morning through a number of workshops.
As for the expected duration of the flood’s continuation, Al-Khatib stated that the flood wave will continue until the amounts of snow on the summits melt, and the preparedness must be maintained during this period, pointing out that such floods bode well for an increase in the drinking water level after it was a low rainy season.
