On Sunday, the Union of Journalists in Syria held a panel discussion entitled “The Future of printing press in Syria”, in which a number of editors-in-chief and directors of some local newspapers participated.
The attendees discussed the future of paper journalism and electronic digital transformation, as several interventions were made on the most prominent problems that prevented the return of paper newspapers to the media arena, according to local media.
Some of the attendees noted that if the print press returns to publication, according to government promises, it should be analytical and opinion newspapers, not news papers that cannot compete with electronic media.
Some considered that the print press has become like a heavy industry that needs government support.
They consider that government support today in Syria needs someone to support it.
Some participants considered that the economic factor is what stands in the way of the re-issue of paper newspapers, pointing out that this is the real reason and that the problem first and foremost is economic.
Some stressed that print newspapers are still present and strongly influential in the world, citing US President Joe Biden when he resorted to the “Washington Post” newspaper to write an article before heading to the Jeddah summit last month.
It is noteworthy that many countries temporarily stopped printing newspapers with the spread of the Corona virus, but they quickly returned to printing with the end of the epidemic, including the Arab countries, Lebanon and Jordan.
It is worth noting that before 2011, the total number of licenses granted to press publications in Syria reached 200, and the total number of Arab and foreign publications entering Syria was 700.
