On Saturday, the Jordanian authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotics from Syrian territory.
An official military source in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces said in a statement that a vehicle loaded with large quantities of narcotics containing 578 pieces of hashish was seized, according to Petra news agency.
The source indicated that 6.447 million Captagon pills, 1,876 Larica-type narcotic pills, and a number of devices and equipment used for smuggling purposes were seized.
The source pointed out that the rules of engagement with the smugglers were applied, which led to the injury of one of them and their flight towards Syrian territory.
Recently, Jordanian Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh announced that there has been a significant increase in drug smuggling from Syria into Jordanian territory.
The past hours witnessed serious raids in the border areas of Zarqa, Irbid and Ramtha in the north of the Kingdom, which led to the arrest of 11 drug dealers and promoters.
It is noteworthy that, on January 27, the Jordanian army issued a decision to change the rules of engagement with smuggle and smugglers who had escaped across the northern and eastern borders.
Border guards became obligated to fire immediately at any suspicious target, according to the decision, after they had fired three warning shots in the air before firing at the target.
