The Syndicate of Spinning and Weaving Workers in Latakia won a lawsuit to re-compensate the jurisdiction for 1,700 workers in 4 spinning and weaving companies.
The case dates back to 2009, when the former Minister of Industry canceled the jurisdiction compensation for workers whose nature of work was the worst in the country. What was remarkable was the union’s move to sue and persevere in litigation for seven years until it obtained a court decision to restore workers’ rights.
In the details of the decision, it was found that the percentage of compensation for the specialty amounts to 6.5% of the salary without additions, and its value ranges between 8-9 thousand pounds per month, and it will be applied retroactively.
All of the above would be classified as part of the qualitative achievements of the union, were it not for the many rumors about the percentage of deductions from the compensation that workers will receive under the lawyer’s fees.
Workers in those companies mentioned that they signed next to their names without knowing what? And what is the amount of the sums that will be deducted from each of them, despite the leaked information indicating that the amount is not less than 60,000 pounds from each worker!
This means, with a simple calculation, that the value of the deduction exceeds 100 million pounds, so is this value all allocated to the lawyer’s fees?!
Many of the workers we tried to talk to were unwilling to talk about it, justifying that what they would have been deprived of for 13 years, regardless of the cuts they would lose, on the principle of “better than nothing.”
Some described this provision as fair because it brings additional income to workers who work in harsh, exhausting and unhealthy conditions.
Some workers who work in spinning stated that with the decline in production in the factories, all the services they were receiving, such as the decline in the level of medical services, despite the great risks they were exposed to in the factory, especially when they were working with cotton contaminated with sand and mud, after the cotton production areas left State control, and the difficulty of securing the cottons required to rotate the machines.
But the result is that the quality of those cottons worsened the situation in the work environment due to the exacerbation of the dust that is inhaled, and all this coincided with the absence of most types of medicines that they were getting from health centers, to dispense a monthly prescription worth 4,000 liras, but the problem is that most of the medicines the ones they ask for are not available, and the value of surgical compensation does not exceed 3-5 thousand Syrian pounds, while its cost exceeds hundreds of thousands of pounds.
