The Ministry of Health is conducting a study to identify children’s nutrition, in cooperation with the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Education. The study includes 10,000 students in the basic education stage from 30 schools in the Syrian governorates, with an average of 24 students from each school, and will continue until April 25th.
The Ministry of Health stated that implementation is carried out by joint health cadres between the Directorate of School Health in the Ministry of Education, and health directorates.
The Director of Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Health, Razan Al-Tarabishi, indicated that schools were visited to meet with principals and submit forms that contain questions related to the level of cleanliness of public facilities in the school, receiving vaccinations, in addition to a form sent to parents to obtain consent for their children to participate in the swabs and some questions about the type of food they eat.
She pointed out that today the field study began and the case was investigated by taking physical measurements of the child, “weight, height and hemoglobin”, with the aim of obtaining a body mass index, in addition to detecting malnutrition and detecting iron deficiency anemia, which is one of the most common forms of anemia. Al-Tarabishi stressed the importance of this study, as it shows results through which the nutritional status of children can be assessed in order to develop a strategy for the nutrition programs currently in use, and pointed out that this study is supported by the World Food Program.
